Telephone Services in North Cyprus

When calling to the TRNC from the UK or any other country calls are routed via Turkey. There is an international access code which is 0090. This is followed by a local area code which is 392 for North Cyprus landlines, then the number. For example the Hillcrest office number would be (0090) 392 822 2613. From the TRNC most european countries may be dialled directly.

Mobile phones
Mobile telephones are very widely used. There are currently two network providers, Telsim and KKTCell which is a local branch of Turkcell. Both companies have alliances with other groups worldwide and a roaming service from a major UK provider is likely to work without problem.

If you are staying in the TRNC for a longer period or making and receiving calls regularly on your UK roaming phone, you would be wise to buy a local simcard. Roaming costs are high and local pay-as-you-go rates more modest. If your UK provider has locked your phone to your network you may need to have it unlocked, or purchase an inexpensive phone locally.

Phone Booths
There are telephone booths in the larger towns for which you will require telephone cards available from the telecommunications Office (PTT) which is in Kyrenia situated opposite the post office. The calls normally work out cheaper than dialing from a metered telephone in a hotel room.

Internet Services
Currently there are no cable services suitable for high speed internet so access via landlines is at dial-up speeds. As an alternative there are at least three providers of wireless internet. They offer higher speeds though at a higher cost than one would expect in the UK. The geographical coverage is expanding to cater for the increasing number of ex pats for whom internet access is important, and the service now covers most of the developed areas along the north coast.
